On an unrelated note

I found this at the downtown library today. Depressing.

Videobacon enters the Mind of Adi at Blue Ribbon Barbecue

Me, Adi Anand, and Ashley Cass spent an afternoon with the crew of Blue Ribbon BBQ eatin’ brisket and talkin’ shop. Side note: I’m learning to use after effects, and very subtly put in some graphics, see if you can spot them.

I’m excited to start shooting with Adi and the newly expanded gang, which now includes Ashley Cass and Rachel Donnan. Miguel of ulovei developed and shoots the series with Adi and Will. Now Miguel and I will be tag teaming the behind-the-camera stuff, all leading up to a big series of interview videos shot at Fun Fun Fun Fest!

PS: The music is by The Happen-Ins who are amazing.

Austin Futures Fair

What do you think Austin should look like in 2110?

Videobacon shot this retro-awk video to promote the Austin Futures Fair, a science-fair of sorts put on by What Is Austin?, Liveable City, and I Love Mike Litt. More information is available at the official website.

Shot by Emmett Kerr-Perkinson, edited by Deneice O’Connor.

Vegan Milkshakes with the Clinkscales

Deneice and I spent an afternoon with the Clinkscales family and the ilovemikelitt guys at Toy Joy, checking out the toys and drinking some incredible milkshakes. The Clinkscales are a very unique family. If anyone knows people at A&E, there is no reason they shouldn’t have a reality series about them. Thanks to Toy Joy for being gracious hosts. Though I’m not a vegetarian by any means, I have to say the vegan milkshakes there are tasty as hell!

The Human Polygastric

Me and Deneice O’Connor co-wrote-and-directed a short for the video contest portion of The Final Bun-Tier hot dog eating contest. It’s a Human Centipede spoof. It’s not necessary to see the movie to get the joke, but watching the trailer would probably help, so that’s embedded below as well.

This is Deneice and I’s first collaboration together, and despite throwing it together in a short amount of time I think it turned out pretty damn well! We’re gonna brainstorm some more concepts soon and write/shoot more shorts (which we can spend a bit more time on) that will hopefully be viable for festivals like SXSW and *crosses fingers* Sundance.

Thanks to everyone who helped out, especially Blair McKay, Frank Frye, Jonathan Braden, and Scott Colquitt!

Ryan Montalvo at Kick Butt Coffee

I shot this video of Ryan Montalvo performing at Kick Butt Coffee on Thursday. Set up my HMC150 on a tripod and went handheld with the 7d. It worked fairly well, but I think I need another camera operator, and maybe a third cam, to really pull off a stellar live show video. Cutting back to the same still frame all the time just isn’t engaging enough. Shooting this the way I did, I had to cut back to the tripoded HMC footage every time my handheld shot got shaky or out of focus, which ended up being quite a bit as I was zooming in and out alot. Lesson learned, next time I do this 2 cam set up, I’ll use the HMC for handheld, since it has servo zoom, keeps focus during zooms, and I can use focus assist while still recording. I’m facepalming pretty bad right now for not doing that with this shoot, but that’s how you get better – making mistakes.

Anyways, the song is really good, especially if you’re into the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. I was definitely pleasantly surprised.

Here’s a music video/boat party recap/Apocalypse Now mash up I’ve been working on for the past few days. Whaddaya think, does it work?

Neiliyo – “I Can’t Date” at Summer Fest

Neiliyo dancing around with a pumped up crowd at summer fest was fun to shoot, but it was so hot that directly after this me and the girls pedicabbed it to the nearest bar. I decided to cut in some random footage I got at the festival, so I guess this is my unofficial recap video. I’m definitely hitting the people-sliding-down-the-hill note a bit too much at the end, but ah well, I ran out of footage!

Houston Summer Fest 2010 Videos – Ra Ra Riot and Kid Sister

I’ve been to a few music festivals this summer, most recently Houston Free Press Summer Fest. It was cool, hot as ballsack, but still worth the 40 bucks me and my girlfriend each paid for a ticket (we got ours late, my friends only paid $20 each). Two performers I filmed were Ra Ra Riot and Kid Sister. I shot them on my Canon 7D, using a Zoom H4 for sound. Zooms are really handy, especially when you’re using a dSLR camera, which have horrible mics (only good to help you sync when you’re editing).

Ra Ra Riot – “St Peter’s Day Parade”

Ra Ra Riot – “Too Dramatic”

Kid Sister – “I’ll House You”

Kid Sister – “Switchboard”

PS: Watch out for some horrible awkward-white-dj dancing in “Switchboard”
